Short term big picture
I recently attended a conference where the keynote speaker, Chirs Grams, talked about communications and effective leadership in a community driven corporate environment. He inspired me to pen these notes a few days later, and I want to share with everyone at FOC.
First and foremost, we need to have a "SHARED PURPOSE, TRANSPARENT AGENDA". What does this mean? We need to all have a shared purpose; a shared sense of purpose where everyone has the same goal and the team goal is more important than individual goals. Deep trust between team members and a culture of respect and humility. A leadership culture, not a management culture.
The last part really plays into FOC. There are too many people waiting for someone to manage a certain area, when what we really need are leaders to step forward. We need people to take on responsibilities... or we need to decide that out purpose and vision is not really that important.
As the communications guy, I ask myself and others these questions about:
the Newsletter
- Do we want to improve?
- How do we improve?
- What unique benefits does the newsletter provide?
- How much does it cost in time and money?
- How many members is it valuable to?
the Bulletin
- Has it improved? What next?
- How do we improve?
- What unique benefits does the newsletter provide?
- How much does it cost in time and money?
- How many members is it valuable to?
both the Newsletter and Bulletin
- How can the website be better utilized?
- What redundancies can we eliminate?
the Website
People/Users/Contacts
- we need one person to master and manage this. to maintain, update, and handle support requests.
- we need a PostMaster, to manage mailings and be the go to person on mass communications
- we need a Events Manager to help others create events, manage participants, facilitate registration
Event Coordinator
- Make sure Event Mgr is listing events that need registration
- Make sure Google Calendars are accurate
- have a overall view of the church goings ons
Other positions needed to work in symphony with web site and me...
Youth Coordinator
Adult Coordinator (general, women, men, etc)
Small/Home Group Coordinator
Quality Assurance... just someone to look over the site, searching for omissions or errors.
Someone to verify account requests. To make sure people joining our site are not lascivious.
Classifieds Mgr
Ad Manager... mainly to manage slideshow on front page
Prayer Coordinator
Counseling Advocate
I think by have many people specialize in specific roles and functions, the learning curve will be short, and losing someone won't be detrimental to continuity. And important to me personally, it will free me to work on bigger picture items rather than be bogged down by trivial daily tasks.
EVERY FOCer NEEDS TO PLAY A ROLE SOMEHOW. Not in the website, just in general. It's time to stop watching and cheering from the stands and get on the playing field.
